(MSC) of Geneva, Switzerland is the world’s largest privately owned and operated shipping line. Founded in 1970 by Gianluigi Aponte, MSC has grown rapidly since its humble begin- nings and now operates a fleet of over 300 container vessels and employs 28,000 staff in 350 offices around the globe. MSC’s Australian operation began on 1 July 1989 from a small office on Syd- ney’s York Street with a staff of two, including managing director, Kevin Clarke. The first MSC container ves- sel to visit Australia, MSC Alexandra, arrived in Sydney on 14 August 1989 from Durban. Eighteen years on, and with new trade routes, larger vessels and over 300 staff, MSC Australia have opened offices in Melbourne, Adelaide, Fremantle and Brisbane. On 1 June 1996, MSC Australia opened an office in Auckland, followed quickly by Christchurch, Tauranga and Wel- lington. MSC’s continued investment in man- aging and operating its own terminals, increasing the capacity of its fleet and modifying routes to meet local economic demands, means that MSC Australia is now able to offer their clients in Australia and New Zealand fast transit times and direct routes to ports around the world. From hub ports, a complex network of feeder systems mean that MSC can transport a clients’ cargo to almost anywhere in the world efficiently and with one bill of lading. MSC Cruises, established in 1995 and based in Naples, Italy, also has a strong presence in Australia with a team of experienced reservations staff based in Sydney and servicing direct clients and travel agents all over the country. MSC Cruises currently have a fleet of nine ships and offer over 65 itineraries throughout the Mediter- ranean, Northern Europe, Caribbean and South America.
